What is a 3D CAD file?

Last updated: 2026-04-09

3D CAD (Computer-Aided Design) file is a mathematical, digital model that accurately represents the physical part you'd like to produce. Created in CAD software, it allows for easy sharing and collaboration. Once designed, a 3D CAD file can be imported into 3D printing software, prepared for printing, and sent to a 3D printer for production.

Commonly referred to as a 3D model or digital CAD file, it serves as the blueprint for turning a design into a physical object.
